Seguimos jugando partidas de iniciación a DBMM, en esta ocasión una partida a 240AP entre las Legiones romanas republicanas, al mando del Cónsul Flavio Quintilio (SPQR) y los invasores helenos de Siracusa, al mando del Hegemon Hierón. Las miniaturas del ejercito consular son de Antonio C y estaban al mando de Victor, los sicilianos son de Sergi R y estaban a sus ordenes.
We continue to play demos of DBMM, this time a 240 AP between Republican Roman legions led by Consul Flavius Quintilius (SPQR) and the Hellenic invaders coming from Syracuse, led by the hegemon Hieron. The models of the consular army came from Antonio C. collection and were commanded by Victor, while the sicillians were from Sergi R.
Para esta partida usamos la mesa que nos preparó Toni y explicamos toda la secuencia inicial del juego, determinar el agresor, escenografía, climatología, hora de inicio de la batalla, etc. Tras las tiradas iniciales resultó que los siracusanos se decidieron a invadir el sur de Italia y las legiones consulares fueron movilizadas para hacerles frente. En una cálida mañana de verano, al despuntar el alba, las dos fuerzas despliegan una frente a la otra y se preparan para el choque inminente.
This time we used the table Toni prepared and we explained the initial sequence of the game: agressivity, terrain, climate, initial hour, etc. After the initial rollings it was established that Syracuse decided to invade Southern Italy, so the consular legions were movilized to stop them. During a warm summer morning, as dawn broke, both forces face each other and ready themselves for the incoming clash.
Pese a ser los invasores, la agresividad romana pilla por sorpresa a los siracusanos y son las legiones las que inician la batalla con un avance de su centro, mientras en los flancos los équites (caballería del flanco derecho romano) como los vélites (hostigadores en el flanco izquierdo) se adelantan para empezar a molestar el avance enemigo. Por su parte, la caballería mercenaria de los siracusanos se desplaza por la retaguardia para buscar un hueco en las líneas latinas en el centro del campo de batalla, mientras las falanges del centro inician el avance de forma lenta y metódica, finalmente, en el flanco derecho griego, los mercenarios son lanzados por delante de los hoplitas para intentar superar la línea de batalla romana y buscar su flanco.
Despite being the invaders, the greeks are caught off guard by Roman agresivity and the legions start the battle with and advance at the center while the equites and the velites at the flanks rush forward to harass the enemy as they close in. Meanwhile, Syracusan mercenary cavalry moves at the rearguard searching for a gap in the Latin battleline while the central phalanx advance slowly & steadily while at the Greek right flank the mercenaries rush forwards, outpacing the hoplites, in order to envelop the Roman flank.

The equites fell against the invading skirmirshers at the top of the hill which dominated the Hellenic left flank. The carnage is bloody and glorious, but swift and brief and the Romans scatter their foes, exposing the phalanx's flank and rear to them. This forces Syracuse to sent some of their Celtic mercenary cavalry back to that flank to avoid disaster as the hoplite formation continues to press forward against the legionary battleline and the mercenary right flank enters the woods left to the Latins with the intention of bursting inside their rear.
En el flanco derecho romano la caballería, una vez despejada la colina de hostigadores, carga cuesta abajo contra el flanco de los helenos, varios lochoi de mercenarios se separan de la formación de la falange principal, uno de ellos consigue maniobrar rápidamente para recibir la carga de los équites presentando su frontal, pero la segunda es alcanzada a la ver por el frente y por su flanco, dejando a los hoplitas en una posición muy complicada. At the Roman right flank the cavalry, once the hill has been cleaned of enemies, charged downhill against the exposed flank of the greeks as several mercenary lochoi detach themselves from the phalanx to face this new menace, but only one of them manages to do so before the horsemen fall upon them. At the center Syracusan auxiliaries charge against the first ranks of legionaries, thus starting the main melee of the battle, but the Celtic cavalrymen failed to join them in time thus wasting the opportunity presented by the opening of a gap between the two legions before it is sealed off by several hastati manipulae. At their left flank the Roman velites enter the forests in order to face the columns of Celtic mercenaries there.
Los hoplitas mercenarios del flanco izquierdo griego aguantan bien la primera acometida de la caballería, dando tiempo a la falange a avanzar más y prepararse para iniciar la carga contra el frente de batalla romano. Mientras en el bosque, los vélites consiguen retener durante un tiempo el avance de los celtas, esto no impide que sean sobrepasados, pero si que les da un tiempo crucial a sus conciudadanos parara que los triarios entren en liza, ocupen su posición en primera línea junto a los prínceps y aguanten una carga de hoplitas griegos y de caballería celta. Los combates son sangrientos y aunque los griegos consiguen algunas pequeñas victorias, no son suficientes como para romper la línea de batalla romana. Todo dependerá del centro y el flanco izquierdo griego.
The merncenary hoplites at the Greek left flank manage to fend off the first cavalry charge,winning time for the phalanx to ready themselves for their showdown with the Roman battleline while at the forests the velites also win some time for the triarii to enter the fray before being overrun by their foes, the old veterans joining the principes as the phalanx and the cavalry clash against them. The fight is savage and even if the Greeks achieve some local victories, they are not enought to break the Roman formation. It all depends now on the center and Greek left flank.
Y finalmente llega el tan esperado choque de los dos centros. Los hoplitas inician una carga escudo con escudo, lanza en ristre contra las posiciones romanas. En el extremo izquierdo de la línea de batalla, el general siracusano y sus guardaespaldas, se imponen a los infantes romanos, abriendo un sangriento hueco en el frente de batalla, pero el resto de hoplitas tienen una suerte dispar. En ese momento, la caballería romana consigue imponerse sobre los mercenarios hoplitas, dejando, ahora si, expuestos completamente el flanco y la retaguardia siracusana. Con el ímpetu de la carga completamente agotado, es el turno de los romanos de devolver el golpe. El hueco abierto por las tropas de élite hoplitas es tapado con manípulos frescos de segunda fila y por unidades de triarios, mientras los équites caen sobre la retaguardia y flancos griegos. Esta carga decide la batalla, la falange es un enemigo temible luchando frontalmente, pero sus flancos y su retaguardia son tremendamente débiles. Las tropas caen rápido o son puestas en fuga, lo que sumado el empuje de los legionarios en el frente, consiguen romper por completo el mando del Comandante siracusano. And so finally comes the expected clash of both centers. The hoplites charge, shield by shield and spear ready, against the Latins. At the very left of the melee the Syracusan general and their bodyguards open a bloody gap among Roman corpses, but the remaining Greeks face an irregular fate. Then the equites manage to break the mercenary resistance at the flank, thus leaving both the flank and the rear of the phalanx open. As the impetus of the charge dies away, it is now the time for the Republic to strike back. The gap opened by the elite hoplites is sealed off with fresh troops from the second rank and triarii units while the equites eviscerate the soft underbelly of the phalanx, sealing her fate. As the Hellenic battering ram hemorrhages casualties and the legionaries press onwards, the Greek center implodes in a rout, which in turn sows panic among the surviving formations at the left flank, who join their comrades in their flight. Roma Victrix!
Fue una batalla muy divertida, donde pudimos explicar muchos casos y cosas a Victor (esperamos que no fuera demasiada información de golpe, jejejejeje). La verdad es que, este tipo de partidas dan pie a muchas situaciones divertidas, momento épicos y cagadas épicas. Seguiremos dando guerra y preparando más batallas.
