[Blitzkrieg Commander] Romper la línea - Afrika 1941

 

Tropas británicas persiguen a los italianos por el norte de África tras romper la línea de frente en la OP Compass. Tropas motorizadas británicas se lanzan a la persecución del enemigo cuando son sorprendidas por una contraofensiva italiana y atacados por ambos flancos, la única posibilidad de los británicos es conseguir romper el cerco y seguir presionando a los italianos.

British forces pursue the Italians at North Africa after breaking the frontline at operation Compass, but are surprised by a counteroffensive that hits both flanks. Thus, their only chance is to break the encirclement before is too late.

Hace unas semanas Alberto y Sergi empezaron una partida de Blitzkrieg Commander v.4 a 1500 puntos en el Norte de África, enmarcada en la Operación Compass de primeros de 1941. Para esta partida jugaron el escenario 8, encirclement (cerco) en el que los italianos, como atacantes han de impedir que las fuerzas británicas (defensores) crucen el campo de batalla. Para ello, las fuerzas italianas despliegas desde los dos flancos del campo de batalla, mientras los ingleses han de recorrer toda la mesa y sacar sus unidades por el lado contrario.

A couple of weeks ago Alberto and Sergi started a 1500 points game of Blitzkrieg Commander IV set during Operation Compass in early 1941. They played scenario 8, encirclement. in which the Italians, as attackers, must stop the British from crossing the battlefield. The Axis deployes at both flank of the table while the Britons must run across it and escape by their opposite side.

Los británicos despliegan a sus infantería mecanizada (todo un pelotón montado en Bren Carriers) en el centro de su zona de despliegue; una sección de apoyo, con varias escuadras de infantería y dos cañones de 2pdr son emplazados en unos edificios a la izquierda para cubrir ese flanco; a la derecha se despliega un segundo pelotón motorizado (todas las unidades van en camiones Matador) y en el extremo derecho los pocos blindados (en este caso tres carros A10) y cañones portee de 2pdr. El plan británico es avanzar a toda velocidad por el centro y tratar de desembarcar a la infantería lo más cerca posible del otro lado del campo de batalla, mientras los blindados cubren un flanco y los cañones de 2pdr el otro.

The British deployed their mechanized infantry (a whole platoon on Bren Carriers) at the center of their deployment zone and a supporting section comprising several infantry squads and two 2pdr cannons are emplaced in some buldings at their left flank in order to cover it. At the right flank deploys the motorized platoon aboard Matador trucks and to the extrem right the few armour vehicles in the force, three A10 tanks, alongside 2pdr portee cannons. The British plan was to advance at the double trought the center disembarking the infantry as close as possible to the other side of the field while the armoured units and the 2pdr cannons covered the flanks.

El pelotón mecanizado avanza muy bien en los primeros momentos de la partida, cruza casi todo el campo de batalla pero un fallo en las comunicaciones hace que la orden de desembarcar se pierda y los vehículos salen del pueblo con la infantería y las ametralladoras aun embarcadas. La unidad motorizada no se mueve al no recibir ninguna orden, así como los A10 que un fallo en las radios o los equipos de señales hacen que no avancen para apoyar a la infantería. Con este cacao de en la línea británica, llegan los italianos por los flancos. Por el flanco izquierdo aparece un gran pelotón de infantería que rápidamente se despliega, posiciona sus armas de apoyo (en este caso morteros y ametralladoras) y abre fuego contra la unidad mecanizada británica, que es pillada en campo abierto. En el otro flanco, en el derecho británico, se despliega parte de la pobre dotación blindada del 10º Ejercito Italiano, con el 3er Batallón de Tanques que se abren en abanico para maximizar sus objetivos. Los tanques ingleses responden a la maniobra italiana, pero no causan ningún efecto, mientras los italianos empiezan a disparar contra los A10, destruyendo uno de ellos y contra las unidades motorizadas, haciendo que muchas de las unidades hayan de abandonar sus vehículos de forma apresurada o destruyendo varios camiones y a los hombres que iban en ellos.

The mechanized platoon advances in good order at the beginning and crosses most of the battlefield, but a misshap in comms lost the order of disembark, so the Bren Carriers exit the hamlet with men and guns still on board. The motorized unit and the A10s does not move as no order arrive to them. With this pandemonium in the British lines, the Italians arrive. At the left flank a massed infantry platoon deploys, sets up their support weapons (mortars & machineguns) and opens fire against the mechanized elements of the United Kingdom. At the other side of the battlefield appears part of the meager armoured detachment of the 10th Italian Army with the 3rd Tank Battalion forming in a opening fan formation in order to maximize their objectives. The British tanks try to disrupt the Axis formation to no avail and, in response, the M13/40s blow up one of the A10s and some Matador trucks, sowing mayhem among the motorized elements of the Allies as their cargo either dies or is forced to disembark in chaos.

Las bajas británicas empiezan a ser criticas y su avance ha quedado completamente detenido por la emboscada italiana, ahora los soldados de la Mancomunidad han de empezar a tomar posiciones defensivas y mirar de detener el avasallador avance italiano antes de que las bajas lleguen a un punto crítico.

British casualties reach critical levels as their advance is stalled by the Italian ambush and now Commonwealth soldiers are forced to take defensive positions and try to stop the overwhelming Italian advance before reaching the breaking point.

La partida quedó en este punto a falta de que Alberto y Sergi la terminen. La verdad que el escenario es de lo más interesante y plantea un serio desafío tanto al atacante como al defensor. Era la primera vez que lo hemos jugado y nos ha tocado tomar buena nota para organizar las fuerzas y unidades de la mejor forma par afrontar los retos de este escenario.

The game stoped here due to lack of time. It is a challenging scenario for both defender and attacker which demands a fgood army compostion in order to have any real chance of victory.

[Blitzkrieg Commander] Asalto al rio Volkhov

 

"Parte del avance alemán en el frente del Este se ha visto frenado por el curso del rio Volkhov. Las tropas soviéticas, tras una apresurada retirada, han destruido todos los puentes y se han atrincherado al otro lado del rio. El Mariscal de Campo, ordena a varias divisiones que fuercen una cabeza de puente al otro lado del rio lo antes posible, para que todo el frente de batalla no quede empantanado. Una de estas unidades a las que se les ordena el asalto, es parte de los voluntarios españoles de la División Azul. Rápidamente, estos veteranos de la Guerra Civil Española, organizan un cuerpo de asalto, con ingenieros, varias piezas de apoyo, morteros y ametralladoras, así como varias baterías de artillería. Los soviéticos, han fortificado su lado del rio con varios campo de minas bien visibles, alambradas y trincheras y pozos de artillería ocultos a la vista de los españoles."

Part of the German advance at the Eastern Front has been stopped at the river Volkhov. Soviet troops, after a hurried retreat, have destroyed all bridges and entrenched themselves a the other side of the waterbody. Field Marshall orders several divisions to force their way across the river to establish a beachhead and thus avoid the whole battleline to stall. One of the selected units to carry the assault is the Spanish voluntary division, also know as the Blue Division. Swiftly, this veterans from the Spanish Civil War organize a storm corps with engineers, several support guns, mortars and machineguns. They also count with the support of several artillery batteries. The Reds, meanwhile, had fortified their river's side with minefields, barbed wire, trenches and gun pits hidden from the Spanish line of sight.

Los españoles inician su avance de forma cautelosa, usando los elementos de cobertura que les ofrece el terreno para acercarse a la orilla del rio sin ser descubiertos por los centinelas soviéticos. Los rusos por su parte, se mantienen bien escondidos y a cubierto para evitar ser descubiertos y ser posibles objetivos de la artillería enemiga. Esto convierte a los primeros momentos de la batalla en juego del gato y el ratón para ver quien comete el primer error y es descubierto o se impacienta y desvela su posición. El pistoletazo de salida, lo dan, por un lado, un equipo antitanque español de un Pak-36, que pierde el control de las mulas que tiran de la pieza y estas avanzan a campo abierto, lo que es aprovechado por un equipo de MG Maxim soviético para abrir fuego sobre ellos, matando a varias de la mulas y dejando al equipo del Pak-36 confundido y buscando refugio en campo abierto.

The Spanish began their advance cautiously, using the terrain to cover and conceal themselves in order to reach the river without being spotted. Thus the battle started as a cat & mouse game waiting for someone to commit a mistake and reveals their positions. This would be a Spanish Pak-36 team, who losses control over it's mules being towed into open terrain only to have the animals shred to bits by a Soviet Maxim MG, leaving the crew of the AT gun confused and looking for cover.

Estas primeras acciones hacen que la batalla se precipite. Los españoles aprietan el paso para acercarse al rio, manteniéndose a cubierto todo el tiempo posible, mientras los FAO (los observadores de artillería) avanzan para localizar las posiciones enemigas y poder pedir fuego de apoyo sobre ellas. La artillería de campo, hace fuego sobre el equipo de MG que ha disparado desde una colina, pero la protección de las casas, hace que apenas sufran daño. Ahora, los soviéticos tienen varios blancos al alcance de sus equipos de apoyo y sus piezas de artillería, así que, el CO (el mando de campo de los rusos) ordena abrir fuego, aunque esto desvelará la posición de varias de la piezas de apoyo. Además ordena avanzar a los blindados de la reserva, un par de SU-76 para que sumen su potencia de fuego al de las piezas de artillería. Esto se demostrará como uno de los peores errores de la partida, ya que al delatar la posición de sus piezas más poderosas tan temprano, permitió a los españoles bombardearlas a placer y dejarlas rápidamente fuera de combate, así como a los los blindados.

This first action precipitate the battle. The Spanish push forward at the double to reach the river, still hiding in the cover, while the Forward Artillery Officers advance to spot the enemy positions and call for artiller fire upon them. Field artiller open fire against the MG that fired from the hill, but the protection of the house shielded them from most damage. Now the Reds have several objectives in range of their support teams and artillery batteries,  so the Commanding Officer orders to open fire, even if that would reveal the position of several of the mentioned artillery pieces. He also commands the armoured reserve to advance. The couple of SU-76 do so and add their firepower to the artillery. This would be one of the worst errors of the match, since revealing the position of their most powerful assets so soon let Blues bomb them to smithereens too early for the Soviet cause.

La artillería española hace su presentación en la batalla con un bombardeo planificado sobre la colina en la que estaba la MG soviética. Tres piezas de gran calibre saturan la zona circundante de proyectiles de alto explosivo, afectando, no solo a la MG que había disparado, sino también a un segundo equipo de MG, una unidad e reconocimiento, una escuadra de infantería y al mando que estaban ocultos por la zona. Mientras, las piezas que estaban en el campo de batalla y que gracias a un equipo de MG que había informado de la posición de los blindados enemigos, hace fuego sobre ellos con todas sus piezas. Los débiles SU-76, que además son de habitáculo descubierto, son incapaces de soportar semejante castigo y en pocos minutos, los dos blindados están fuera de combate. Viendo el error, los rusos ordenan a sus unidades que permanezcan ocultas y no disparen mientras no tengan al enemigo más cerca y sea un objetivo claro. Como las piezas de artillería ya han revelado su posición, estas si que siguen disparando y empiezan a eliminar escuadra tras escuadra de los españoles.

Spanish artillery enters the game with a preplanned barrage against the hill that sheltered the Maxim Mg that opened the hostilities. Three big caliber guns saturate the area with high explosive rounds, disrupting not only said MG, but also another MG team, a recon unit, an infantry squad and one HQ. Meanwhile, a Blue MG team spots the Soviet armoured reserve and directs the fire of the field artillery. The flimsy open-topped SU-76 are unable to resist the punishment and are knock out in a matter of minutes. Seeing the mistake made, the Russian command orders the remaining units to lay low until the enemy approaches and becomes a clear target. Artillery guns continue to fire due to being already revealed and reap their bloody toll on the Spanish squads.

Los españoles consiguen llegar a la orilla del rio en varios puntos y rápidamente los ingenieros empiezan a tender puentes para que las unidades puedan cruzar. Es un trabajo lento y duro, ya que ahora si, los soviéticos empiezan a disparar sobre los ingenieros que están trabajando sobre los pontones. Los españoles siguen castigando las posiciones rusas con la potencia de su artillería, un nuevo bombardeo planificado cae sobre la colina, eliminando del todo a las unidades rusas de la zona, lo que crea un hueco peligroso en la línea de defensa. Además, las baterías de campo centra su fuego sobre las dos piezas de 122mm rusas, desmontando una de ellas y dañando de forma crítica a la segunda. A estas alturas de la batalla, ambos bandos han sufrido gran cantidad de bajas y las perdidas de los dos, superan con crece el 30% de las unidades iniciales, pero esto no hace mella en los combatientes que están decididos a cumplir su misión a todo coste.

The Iberians reach the river at several points and the engineers start working in pontoon bridges to cross. It is hard and slow work, and the Soviet troops open fire against them to disrupt their efforts. Meanwhile the Spanish continue to unleash their artillery against Red positions and a second preplanned barrage falls upon the hill, erasing the Russian units in the area for good and leaving a dangerous hole in the defensive system. Worse still, their field artillery wipes out one of their Soviet counterparts and critically damages a second one. By now both sides has lost more than 30% of their starting strength, but they press on nevertheless.

Las tropas de la División Azul, finalmente consiguen cruzar el rio Volkhov por dos puntos, uno más al norte, donde los ingenieros han conseguido terminar un puente sobre las aguas y en otro al sur, donde una unidad de veteranos ha conseguido cruzar gracias a sus lanchas y botes de asalto. Parece que la batalla se decanta finalmente para los españoles, pero de pronto, un terrible error en las comunicaciones de uno de los FAO hace que tres de las seis piezas de artillería pesada hagan fuego sobre posiciones amigas, la potencia de estas piezas es descomunal y eliminan o dejan fuera de combate a casi todo el centro de la División, al FAO que había dado la orden, a unidades de Recon cercanas y a las dos unidades de ingenieros que aun estaban tirando puentes sobre el rio. Pero la alegría a los soviéticos les dura poco, otras tres piezas de 150mm son apuntadas al flanco derecho, para proteger a los veteranos en los botes, así como las piezas del campo de batalla, que también hacen fuego sobre esa zona. La concentración de artillería es tal, que ni las trincheras sirven de mucho y al final el flanco derecho ruso cae y se derrumba.

Finally, Blue Division elements manage to cross the Volkhov at two points: one at the north, were the engineers successfully deployed the pontoons, and antoher at the south, were several veterans had crossed the waters via assault boats. It seems that the battle is going to the Axis side, but a critical comms blunder directs the fire of half of the Spanish artiller against friendly positions. The firestorm that follows destroys almost the whole center of the Spanish formation, including the FAO that had given the order to fire in the first place and several recon units along two pioneer units still building bridges. But Soviet joy is short-lived as the other half of the enemy artillery, three 150mm guns, concentrate against their right flank and almost obliterates all of it, leaving few survivors to oppose the sailing veterans.

Al final, los soviéticos, con más de un 50% de bajas sufridas durante la batalla, se retiran del campo de batalla, dejando a los españoles consolidar sus cabezas de puente y el cruce libre del Volkhov. La batalla fue muy interesante, con tres jugadores que dominan el reglamento y que suelen usar bien las estratagemas. Los soviéticos por ejemplo, los tres campos de minas que había marcados en el campo de batalla, eran falsos, simples parcelas de tierra removida y marcada con carteles y alambre para simular campos de minas, pero las zonas de terreno despejado que había entre campo de minas falso y campo de minas falso, esas si que estaban minadas y bien minadas. Los jugadores contaban con 2500 puntos el atacante, la División Azul de Borja y con 1250 puntos los Sovieticos de Alberto y Sergi. Una partida muy muy muy igualada en que las opciones de victoria estuvieron en las manos de ambos bandos.

In the end, the Soviets are forced to retreat after losing more than 50% of their own as casualties, thusl eaving the Spanish to consolidate the beachhead across the Volkhov. It was an interesting game, with three players that know the rules and use them with ability (let's say 2,5). For example, The Soviet minefields were dummies, just stirred up earth marked by signals and barbed wire while the areas between them were the truly mined ones. Players had 2.500 points to attack and 1.250 points to defend. It was a very close match in which both sides had options to win in several ocassions.

[Blitzkrieg Commander] En algún lugar de Africa

     "Tras una escaramuza entre fuerzas blindadas italianas y británicas, un tanque MK II A10 inglés sufrió varios impactos que le destrozaron las orugas e inmovilizaron al vehículo. La tripulación logró escapar y ponerse a salvo.  Pasados unos días, en los que la situación parece estabilizarse y el frente se aleja, se envía de nuevo a la dotación del Vickers a recuperar el tanque, con algunos mecánicos y elementos de las 11ª Brigada del 4th Infantry Division como protección. Justo cuando los mecánicos y tanquistas termina de sustituir las orugas del tanque; los elementos avanzados de la infantería informan de que han detectado tropas italianas en la zona en formación de combate. Tanto el MK II como la infantería se movilizan para hacer frente a las tropas del Eje."

"During a skirmish between British and Italian armoured forces, an English MKII A10 was hit several times that ruptured it's tracks inmobilising it. The crew managed to escape and after several days of quiet calm, the fight went elsewhere. The British command sent then the crew with order to recover the tank aided by several mechanics and elements of the 11th Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division as protetion. Just as they managed ot repair the damaged tracks, forward elements reported Italian troops closing in in combat formation. Both the MKII and the infantry ready themselves to face Axis forces."

Las unidades británicas empiezan relativamente bien, con uno de los sub-oficiales avanzando decididamente para tomar posiciones en el pueblo, mientras, a lo lejos, la infantería italiana se despliega tras una pequeña elevación del terreno a cubierto del enemigo. Por el momento, las fuerzas del eje, parecen solo unidades de infantería y algún recon blindado. Aun y así, los ingleses intentan desplegar una pieza anti-carro de 2pdr.

The Britons started well as one subofficer boldly advances with his men to take position inside the nearby village. On the horizon Italian infantry deploys behind a small hill that shelter them from the enemy. Axis forces seem to be comprised only by footmen and some recce armoured cars. Even so, the islanders try to deploy a 2pdr AT gun.

Los primeros momentos de la batalla son muy fluidos y las unidades de ambos bandos intentan posicionarse lo mejor posible. Dada la distancia, hay muy poco fuego de armas ligeras o medias y el único que consigue hacer fuego (pero no muy efectivo) es el Vickers MK II A10 británico.

The opening of the battle is fluid indeed as units of both armies try to get the best positions. Given the great distances between tem, few shots are fired. The excepton is the Vickers MKII A10, but it's fire is uneffective.

Pero parece ser que el ruido y el fuego del tanque ingles, espolean a las tropas libias de los italianos, que llegan al campo de batalla con varios blindados y más unidades de infantería. La cosa se complica para los soldados de las islas. Ahora, con una proporción de más de 2 a 1 a favor de las tropas del eje (y de 3 a 1 en blindados), los italianos se lanzan a fondo a por los ingleses. Con un par de andanadas bien colocadas, especialmente una que le da de flanco, el MK II A10 ingles salta por los aires con una tremenda explosión.

In fact, it seems that the tank's activity provokes the Lybian native soldiers to come into the battle supported by several Italian M13/40 and Semoventes. Now the Britons face 2:1 numerical odds (3:1 in armour). The emboldened Italians launch an all out assault all along the front and a couple of well placed shots transforms the English A10 into a fireball.

Los comandantes italianos, al darse cuenta de que sus armas disponen de mayor alcance que las del enemigo, juegan muy bien esa ventaja y tras posicionar a sus tropas, se dedican a eliminar sistemáticamente a las unidades de la 11ª Brigada. Los ingleses intentan parapetarse en el pueblo, los muros y devolver el fuego, pero lo hacen de forma desordenada y poco efectiva, lo que hace que empiecen a acumularse las bajas entre sus tropas.

Italian HQ realise then that most of their guns enjoy superior range than that of their foes and play to that advantage, systematically erasing the units of the 11th Brigade form afar. The later ones try to cover themselves with the town's buildings and return fire, but they do so disorganized and casualties start to mount.

Los italianos, finalmente consiguen romper por completo el flanco izquierdo inglés, mientras los libios mantienen fijados a los que hay en el centro y el flanco derecho. El comandante italiano, viendo una buena oportunidad de acabar con los defensores que quedan ordena el asalto a los edificios del pueblo del flanco izquierdo para sobrepasar y rodear la línea inglesa y terminar con la batalla.

In the end, the Italians manage to break the British left flank whilst the Lybians pin down both the center and the right flank. Seeing a good chance to end the defenders once for all, Italian C-in-C orders a frontal assault against the broken left flank in order to encircle the remaining Britons.

Llegados a este punto, los ingleses ya no aguantan más la presión y las bajas, así que empiezan a huir del campo de batalla, dando una victoria absoluta a las fuerzas del Eje.

Esta partida la jugaron Alberto, con sus italianos y Sergi, con sus británicos. Decimos jugar una partida "tipo" de las que nos podremos encontrar en la campaña de Afrika de WWII que empezaremos a jugar en unos días. El resultado de la batalla fué una Victoria Mayor par los italianos, lo que hubiera provocado la destrucción completa la 11ª Brigada inglesa para el resto de la campaña. Una partida muy divertida, donde la suerte y las  acciones brillantes de los mandos fueron fluctuando en cada turno.

The demoralized defenders, incapable of sustaining the mounting attrition, rout en masse leaving the battlefield to the victorious legions of New Rome.

This game was played between Alberto's Italians and Sergi's British. It was a test for the upcoming Afrika campaign we will start soon. It was a Major Victory for the Italians which would have ended the existence of the 11th Brigade for the remainder of the campaign. It was funny and full of fluctuating luck and HQ competence.

[Iron Cross] Partida de prueba/iniciaición

 

Como os comentamos en una entrada anterior, ha llegado a nuestras manos un reglamento para pequeñas batallas de la SGM: Iron Cross. Este reglamento de Great Escape Games, usa el mismo motor básico que su hermano de la Guerra Fría, Seven Days to the River Rhine.

As we wrote in a last entry, we came across a ruleset for small WWII skirmishes: Iron Cross. Coming from Great Escape Games, it uses the same basic motor of his Cod War brother: Seven Days to the River Rhine.

Para esta partida Antonio preparó una fuerza alemana, con las listas básicas que vienen en el reglamento de 500 puntos y Sergi hizo lo propio con las tropas soviéticas. Como en 7 Days, las fuerzas de ambos ejércitos estaba sobre los 10-15 elementos (contando blindados, infantería, apoyo y reconocimiento). El juego tiene el mismo espíritu de partidas rápidas y dinámicas entre un número reducido de fuerzas.

This time Antonio prepared a German force with the basic lists of the rulebook, 500 points strong. Sergi did the same with his Soviets. As with 7 Days, the strength of both forces was around ten to fifteen elements (armour, infantry,suport and recon). The game keeps the spirit of quick & dynamic games between small contingents.

Al mando de las unidades alemanas se puso Alberto y Sergi comandó a sus rusos. Se jugó una batalla campal, ya que al ser la primera vez que jugabamos con este reglamento, preferimos centrar la partida en ver las reglas y mecánicas y dejar un poco de lado los objetivos o misiones.

Alberto took command of the Germans whilst Sergi led his Russians. They playd a pitched battle to learn the rules nad mechanics of the game without complicating things with objectives or missions.

Alberto, empezó la partida muy bien, consiguiendo que los rusos desplegasen primero y obteniendo la iniciativa en los primeros compases de la batalla. Pero a partir de aquí.... la cosa empezó a ir en otra dirección (realmente las tiradas de dados no lo acompañaron para nada a partir del tercer turno).

Alberto started the game really well, managing to deploy after the Soviets did so and achieving initiative for the first turns. But after that the die gods casted their gaze away from him and things went awry.

Los alemanes empezaron fuerte destruyendo varios T-34 mientras el fuego de respuesta ruso no conseguía prácticamente nada (más allá de algún impacto superficial en los vehículos germanos). Pero los rusos contraatacaron avanzando con su infantería y rodeando a los alemanes por la derecha con un solitario T-34/85. Este tanque, consiguió flanquear a un Panzer VI Tiger Ausf. B o un Tiger II  - Königstiger y con un certero impacto en el lateral, lo consiguió dejar fuera de combate.

The Germans started strong destroying several T-34s without suffering anything worse than an occasional glancing hit from the Red response. But the Soviets counterattacked with their infantry and enveloped the German left flank with one T-34/85 who managed to hit the single Panzer VI Königstiger at their flank, thus destroying it.
