[Shako II] Battle of Halle, 1806

It has been a while since we took the fields of the XIXth century, so some weeks ago Edu and Sergi resolved to play a scenario from the book "Fields of Glory", a pack of scenarios for Shako and Shako II released some years ago. Most of them are from the first years of the Napoleonic Wars and the decided to play Halle 1806.

The book introduces the historical context of the scenario and gives a battlemap with the starting position of the units involved, including the entry points of reinforcements (and the turn in which they do so). This time, after being defeated the Prussian army is withdrawing and the French want to take advantage of this to put the last nail in their coffin.

Because it has been so long since the last time we played with our Napoleonic troops, we wanted the most beatiful table possible, so we used the modular table of our Castrum, even if it meant that elements and troops were not exactly as displayed in the map.

Commandments were deployed at their assigned areas, the French of Dupont entering the village followed by Rivaud's division and the Prussians, including cavalry, at their left flank near the village, which in turn as garrisoned by L'Estoq. Lilienberg's brigade was at the center on the road protecting the supply wagons' route. Finally, Schröder brigade was at the right flank.

French troops start pouring into the village with the intention of exiting it as near as possible from the Prussians with a good battleline. The Germans deployed several rtillery batteries to open fire against the town as the cavalry positions herself to protect the infantry.

Just when the first Frenchmen arrive to the edge of the town, Prussian cannons open fire whilst the Chasseurs a Cheval advance at the center of the village. Meanwhile, the second French division starts crossing the river via the only bridge present in the area with the reinforcement brigade following them.

With his men being under heavy fire from the enemy artillery and the Second Division arriving to the town's gates, Dupont blunders and gives the disastrous order to advance against the enemy after doing very, very wrong calculations about the Prussian cavalry and the distance between them. French infantry bursts out of the village shouting Vive l'Empereur! but, just when they deploy in battleline formation amidst the thundering of cannonfire and clouds of powder smoke, Prussian bugles yell to charge and squadrons of Prussian hussars and hunters throw themselves against the French line. The Imperialsreact with several volleys of musketry, but to no avail. Thus the Germans reach their foe.

The Chasseurs a Cheval receive the impetus of two Prussian regiments, one of them at their flank. This dissolves the French unit into a rout which enables the German cavalry to press forward against the Imperial infantry behind the Chasseurs. This second infantry unit is also routed by the heroic Teuton riders.

After this monstruous defeat, the remaining Frenchmen of Dupont's division saw their morale destroyed and start fleeing the battlefield. Bernadotte, seeing this catastrophe, orders Rivaud to accelerate his movements and secure the town as quickly as possible in order to stop the hemorrhage among the French army.

Here ends the first part of this AAR,with the French facing the daunting prospect of stabilizing a battle that was suppoused to be just an easy hunt. Stay tuned to see if they manage to do so!
