[DBMM] Roma invade Java

Pues sí, la VIIII Legión de Cayo Sergilio, tras cruzar territorio persa y la cordillera del Paropamisus, se embarca para atacar la isla de Java, bajo control chino de los Yuan. La partida de DBMM se jugó entre los romanos imperiales del Siglo I de Sergi y los chinos del imperio Yuan del siglo XIII de David C.

So, Gaius Sergilius' VIIII Legion, after crossing Persian territory and the Paropamisus mountain range, embarks to attack Yuan's Java. This was a DBMM game between Sergi's first century Imperial Romans and David's thirteen century Yuan Chinese (an All-Proxies army).

Una vez escogida la estación del año en la que ambos generales quieren atacar (los dos escogieron invierno), se realiza la tira de agresión. Como la tirada fue un empate, se cambia automáticamente la estación a la siguiente, primavera, y se tira de nuevo. Esta vez ganaron los romanos, así que las legiones invaden territorio Yuan, concretamente la isla de Java.

After choosing the season in which both generals wish to attack (both chose winter) both players must roll for their aggresivity to see who invades who. As that roll was a draw, the season changes to the next one, spring, and they both roll again. The Romans won, so the Imperial Legions invaded the island of Java in Yuan territory.

Los primeros en desplegar fueron los defensores con una formación muy estándar: infantería en el centro (en esta ocasión, un mando de aliados javaneses, formado por partidas de guerra y psiloi) y los flancos con tropas ligeras y caballería. Los romanos por su lado desplegaron con un flanco rechazado, con la infantería pesada protegida por unas marismas a su derecha y los auxiliares protegiendo el flanco izquierdo y un par de estratagemas en marcha.

The defender deploys first, this time with a common formation: infantry at the center (including one command of Javanese allies formed by warbands and psiloi) and both flanks with light troops and cavalry. The Romans decided to refuse one flank,with their heavy infantry between a swamp to their right in the center of their deployment zone and the Auxilia covering their left flank. They also had a couple of shenanigans under their sleeve.

Los primeros turnos fueron muy rápidos, con los romanos realizando pequeños ajustes en su línea y destacando unos pocos auxilia a presionar a la caballería, mientras los chinos maniobran para reorganizar la línea de batalla (y se dirigen a una trampa sin saberlo).

The first turns came and went quickly as the Roman limited themselves to minor corrections of their line and sending some Auxilia to add pressure against the Chinese cavalry. Meanwhile the Chinese reorganized themselves because of the refused flank, completely unaware that they are falling into a trap.

Con una coordinación increíble, justo cuando las unidades ligeras Yuan están a punto de rodear la marisma y amenazar la retaguardia romana, llega un mando romano que había sido dejado en reserva justo para eso. La llegada de los equites romanos pilla a la caballería ligera enemiga por sorpresa y varias unidades son forzadas a realizar un movimiento de retirada, desordenado el mando chino por completo.

With almost perfect timing as the Yuan light units are about to encircle the swap and thus fall against the Roman rear, th Roman retarded command accomplishes his mission by arriving just then. The arrival of the Equites forces the off-guard Chinese cavalry to retreat in disarray.

Por suerte para los Yuan, el mando principal de caballería pesada no estaba muy lejos y acude a hacer frente a los equites romanos, desatándose durísimos combates de caballería.

Thankfully for the Yuan, the main Heavy Cavalry command was close enough to came to the rescue facing the Roman Equites in vicious combat.

Mientras, los aliados de Java casi han llegado a la posición romana, pero como llegan en una mala posición, la mayor fuerza de su carga se pierde consiguiendo los romanos mantener la línea. Lo que al acercarse los javaneses (no se si es correcto...) a la posición romana, de repente descubren que la cantidad de auxiliares es mucho menor de lo que parecía que la línea del flanco izquierdo romano es mucho más pequeña y débil (si, los romanos habían usado la estratagema "tropas exageradas" con exito!!!)

Meanwhile, the Javanese allies charge against the Roman line, but they do it wrongfooted so most of their impetus is wasted and the Romans endure. As they close in, however, they realize that there are fewer Auxilia as it seemed from afar. The Orientals discovered too late that the Europeans used the stratagem "exaggerated troops" in their left flank.

En el flanco derecho romano, los equites son finalmente derrotados, aunque han conseguido causar serias bajas a los Yuan. Las últimas unidades luchan encarnizadamente por huir o derrotar al enemigo, mientras el grueso de la caballería china se reagrupa para acudir en auxilio de los aliados de Java, que no les está yendo muy bien.

In the right flank the outnumbered Equites are defeated only after causing heavy casualties to the Yuan mounted troops. There are still pockets of resistance as the bulk of the Chinese cavalry regroups to help their Javanese allies, who are faltering in face of Roman stoicism.

Por desgracia, la caballería china no llega a tiempo y el mando aliado cae y rompe su moral, lo que provoca una caída de moral a las unidades cercanas, haciendo huir también al mando Yuan de caballería ligera. Con dos de sus tres mandos desmoralizados, el comandante chino ordena la retira general, dejando a los victoriosos romanos en el campo de batalla.

Una partida muy interesante y divertida, la verdad es que hubo muchísimas risas a medida que los romanos iban revelando sus estratagemas y pillando a los chinos por sorpresa una y otra vez. El tema de las estratagemas en DBMM es algo poco visto, pero que le da una mayor profundidad y diversión al juego. Será algo que continuaremos investigando y probando, sin duda.

But to no avail as their Allied command breaks under tremedous casualties, spreading panic among the rest of the Chinese army forcing the rout of the Light Cavalry command. With two of his three commands in full retreat, the Chinese commander gives in and orders the withdrawal fron the field, leaving it to the victorious Romans.

This was an interesting game due to the clever use of stratagems by the Roman side, who managed to catch the Chinese by surprise every single time. Strategems are an interesting topic that gives DBMM another layer of complexity and fun and that is rarely used among our little community. I fear tought, that Pandora's box has been opened.
