"Parte del avance alemán en el frente del Este se ha visto frenado por el curso del rio Volkhov. Las tropas soviéticas, tras una apresurada retirada, han destruido todos los puentes y se han atrincherado al otro lado del rio. El Mariscal de Campo, ordena a varias divisiones que fuercen una cabeza de puente al otro lado del rio lo antes posible, para que todo el frente de batalla no quede empantanado. Una de estas unidades a las que se les ordena el asalto, es parte de los voluntarios españoles de la División Azul. Rápidamente, estos veteranos de la Guerra Civil Española, organizan un cuerpo de asalto, con ingenieros, varias piezas de apoyo, morteros y ametralladoras, así como varias baterías de artillería. Los soviéticos, han fortificado su lado del rio con varios campo de minas bien visibles, alambradas y trincheras y pozos de artillería ocultos a la vista de los españoles."
Part of the German advance at the Eastern Front has been stopped at the river Volkhov. Soviet troops, after a hurried retreat, have destroyed all bridges and entrenched themselves a the other side of the waterbody. Field Marshall orders several divisions to force their way across the river to establish a beachhead and thus avoid the whole battleline to stall. One of the selected units to carry the assault is the Spanish voluntary division, also know as the Blue Division. Swiftly, this veterans from the Spanish Civil War organize a storm corps with engineers, several support guns, mortars and machineguns. They also count with the support of several artillery batteries. The Reds, meanwhile, had fortified their river's side with minefields, barbed wire, trenches and gun pits hidden from the Spanish line of sight.
Los españoles inician su avance de forma cautelosa, usando los elementos de cobertura que les ofrece el terreno para acercarse a la orilla del rio sin ser descubiertos por los centinelas soviéticos. Los rusos por su parte, se mantienen bien escondidos y a cubierto para evitar ser descubiertos y ser posibles objetivos de la artillería enemiga. Esto convierte a los primeros momentos de la batalla en juego del gato y el ratón para ver quien comete el primer error y es descubierto o se impacienta y desvela su posición. El pistoletazo de salida, lo dan, por un lado, un equipo antitanque español de un Pak-36, que pierde el control de las mulas que tiran de la pieza y estas avanzan a campo abierto, lo que es aprovechado por un equipo de MG Maxim soviético para abrir fuego sobre ellos, matando a varias de la mulas y dejando al equipo del Pak-36 confundido y buscando refugio en campo abierto.
The Spanish began their advance cautiously, using the terrain to cover and conceal themselves in order to reach the river without being spotted. Thus the battle started as a cat & mouse game waiting for someone to commit a mistake and reveals their positions. This would be a Spanish Pak-36 team, who losses control over it's mules being towed into open terrain only to have the animals shred to bits by a Soviet Maxim MG, leaving the crew of the AT gun confused and looking for cover.
Estas primeras acciones hacen que la batalla se precipite. Los españoles aprietan el paso para acercarse al rio, manteniéndose a cubierto todo el tiempo posible, mientras los FAO (los observadores de artillería) avanzan para localizar las posiciones enemigas y poder pedir fuego de apoyo sobre ellas. La artillería de campo, hace fuego sobre el equipo de MG que ha disparado desde una colina, pero la protección de las casas, hace que apenas sufran daño. Ahora, los soviéticos tienen varios blancos al alcance de sus equipos de apoyo y sus piezas de artillería, así que, el CO (el mando de campo de los rusos) ordena abrir fuego, aunque esto desvelará la posición de varias de la piezas de apoyo. Además ordena avanzar a los blindados de la reserva, un par de SU-76 para que sumen su potencia de fuego al de las piezas de artillería. Esto se demostrará como uno de los peores errores de la partida, ya que al delatar la posición de sus piezas más poderosas tan temprano, permitió a los españoles bombardearlas a placer y dejarlas rápidamente fuera de combate, así como a los los blindados.
This first action precipitate the battle. The Spanish push forward at the double to reach the river, still hiding in the cover, while the Forward Artillery Officers advance to spot the enemy positions and call for artiller fire upon them. Field artiller open fire against the MG that fired from the hill, but the protection of the house shielded them from most damage. Now the Reds have several objectives in range of their support teams and artillery batteries, so the Commanding Officer orders to open fire, even if that would reveal the position of several of the mentioned artillery pieces. He also commands the armoured reserve to advance. The couple of SU-76 do so and add their firepower to the artillery. This would be one of the worst errors of the match, since revealing the position of their most powerful assets so soon let Blues bomb them to smithereens too early for the Soviet cause.
La artillería española hace su presentación en la batalla con un bombardeo planificado sobre la colina en la que estaba la MG soviética. Tres piezas de gran calibre saturan la zona circundante de proyectiles de alto explosivo, afectando, no solo a la MG que había disparado, sino también a un segundo equipo de MG, una unidad e reconocimiento, una escuadra de infantería y al mando que estaban ocultos por la zona. Mientras, las piezas que estaban en el campo de batalla y que gracias a un equipo de MG que había informado de la posición de los blindados enemigos, hace fuego sobre ellos con todas sus piezas. Los débiles SU-76, que además son de habitáculo descubierto, son incapaces de soportar semejante castigo y en pocos minutos, los dos blindados están fuera de combate. Viendo el error, los rusos ordenan a sus unidades que permanezcan ocultas y no disparen mientras no tengan al enemigo más cerca y sea un objetivo claro. Como las piezas de artillería ya han revelado su posición, estas si que siguen disparando y empiezan a eliminar escuadra tras escuadra de los españoles.
Spanish artillery enters the game with a preplanned barrage against the hill that sheltered the Maxim Mg that opened the hostilities. Three big caliber guns saturate the area with high explosive rounds, disrupting not only said MG, but also another MG team, a recon unit, an infantry squad and one HQ. Meanwhile, a Blue MG team spots the Soviet armoured reserve and directs the fire of the field artillery. The flimsy open-topped SU-76 are unable to resist the punishment and are knock out in a matter of minutes. Seeing the mistake made, the Russian command orders the remaining units to lay low until the enemy approaches and becomes a clear target. Artillery guns continue to fire due to being already revealed and reap their bloody toll on the Spanish squads.
Los españoles consiguen llegar a la orilla del rio en varios puntos y rápidamente los ingenieros empiezan a tender puentes para que las unidades puedan cruzar. Es un trabajo lento y duro, ya que ahora si, los soviéticos empiezan a disparar sobre los ingenieros que están trabajando sobre los pontones. Los españoles siguen castigando las posiciones rusas con la potencia de su artillería, un nuevo bombardeo planificado cae sobre la colina, eliminando del todo a las unidades rusas de la zona, lo que crea un hueco peligroso en la línea de defensa. Además, las baterías de campo centra su fuego sobre las dos piezas de 122mm rusas, desmontando una de ellas y dañando de forma crítica a la segunda. A estas alturas de la batalla, ambos bandos han sufrido gran cantidad de bajas y las perdidas de los dos, superan con crece el 30% de las unidades iniciales, pero esto no hace mella en los combatientes que están decididos a cumplir su misión a todo coste.
The Iberians reach the river at several points and the engineers start working in pontoon bridges to cross. It is hard and slow work, and the Soviet troops open fire against them to disrupt their efforts. Meanwhile the Spanish continue to unleash their artillery against Red positions and a second preplanned barrage falls upon the hill, erasing the Russian units in the area for good and leaving a dangerous hole in the defensive system. Worse still, their field artillery wipes out one of their Soviet counterparts and critically damages a second one. By now both sides has lost more than 30% of their starting strength, but they press on nevertheless.
Las tropas de la División Azul, finalmente consiguen cruzar el rio Volkhov por dos puntos, uno más al norte, donde los ingenieros han conseguido terminar un puente sobre las aguas y en otro al sur, donde una unidad de veteranos ha conseguido cruzar gracias a sus lanchas y botes de asalto. Parece que la batalla se decanta finalmente para los españoles, pero de pronto, un terrible error en las comunicaciones de uno de los FAO hace que tres de las seis piezas de artillería pesada hagan fuego sobre posiciones amigas, la potencia de estas piezas es descomunal y eliminan o dejan fuera de combate a casi todo el centro de la División, al FAO que había dado la orden, a unidades de Recon cercanas y a las dos unidades de ingenieros que aun estaban tirando puentes sobre el rio. Pero la alegría a los soviéticos les dura poco, otras tres piezas de 150mm son apuntadas al flanco derecho, para proteger a los veteranos en los botes, así como las piezas del campo de batalla, que también hacen fuego sobre esa zona. La concentración de artillería es tal, que ni las trincheras sirven de mucho y al final el flanco derecho ruso cae y se derrumba.
Finally, Blue Division elements manage to cross the Volkhov at two points: one at the north, were the engineers successfully deployed the pontoons, and antoher at the south, were several veterans had crossed the waters via assault boats. It seems that the battle is going to the Axis side, but a critical comms blunder directs the fire of half of the Spanish artiller against friendly positions. The firestorm that follows destroys almost the whole center of the Spanish formation, including the FAO that had given the order to fire in the first place and several recon units along two pioneer units still building bridges. But Soviet joy is short-lived as the other half of the enemy artillery, three 150mm guns, concentrate against their right flank and almost obliterates all of it, leaving few survivors to oppose the sailing veterans.
Al final, los soviéticos, con más de un 50% de bajas sufridas durante la batalla, se retiran del campo de batalla, dejando a los españoles consolidar sus cabezas de puente y el cruce libre del Volkhov. La batalla fue muy interesante, con tres jugadores que dominan el reglamento y que suelen usar bien las estratagemas. Los soviéticos por ejemplo, los tres campos de minas que había marcados en el campo de batalla, eran falsos, simples parcelas de tierra removida y marcada con carteles y alambre para simular campos de minas, pero las zonas de terreno despejado que había entre campo de minas falso y campo de minas falso, esas si que estaban minadas y bien minadas. Los jugadores contaban con 2500 puntos el atacante, la División Azul de Borja y con 1250 puntos los Sovieticos de Alberto y Sergi. Una partida muy muy muy igualada en que las opciones de victoria estuvieron en las manos de ambos bandos.
In the end, the Soviets are forced to retreat after losing more than 50% of their own as casualties, thusl eaving the Spanish to consolidate the beachhead across the Volkhov. It was an interesting game, with three players that know the rules and use them with ability (let's say 2,5). For example, The Soviet minefields were dummies, just stirred up earth marked by signals and barbed wire while the areas between them were the truly mined ones. Players had 2.500 points to attack and 1.250 points to defend. It was a very close match in which both sides had options to win in several ocassions.
