The new edition of Warhammer 40.000 is already upon us with a new ruleset, lore development and new models from the basic box. As usual, we wanted to test yet another game and, unable to wait for a proper release we did so with ust the core rules to see the differences with the last edition (in the case of Alberto, just to learn, because he never played 8th edition despite numerous aborted attempts!)

The first thing that drew our eyes was the table size. In this new edition the size of it is linked to the points in game. We played a small game or patrol, so we ended up in a 44x30 inches battlefield, a far cry from the usual 180x120cm.

We are not going to analize in depth the changes in the rules, since there are plenty of webs, podcasts, blogs, etcetera, that do so better than us. So, here we are going to write about what has drawn our eyes and our feelings about.

The game itself was quick, but being a new ruleset, we spent a lot of time browsing throught it, so the first turns were far slower than they should be. But the rules are simple, so after a couple of turns we barely needed to check anything but details.

We must mention the relevancy of terrain, both for line of sight, movement and unit saving. It is recommended to play with a good number of terrain elements, thus making short and mid distance fire paramount and giving assault and rapid fire weapons an interesting rol in the game. This way you end up with moviesque firefights at full auto around the objectives.

Another couple of things to mention are the changes in squad coherence, which forces units to move tighter than before and the fact that now it is not possible to move through friendly units, making the movement phase more tactical in nature. One must be careful with the movements, because if for some reason there are models out of squad coherence at the end of the turn, they are lost.

In the end we felt that the game core is simple, similar to 8th edition, but with new rules that make the game more tactically deep. Now we want to try the Crusade mode, which we believe is the most awaited among veteran players.

Even if we are fans of Oldhammer and 2nd edition, this new one seems to have some interesting things that we are surely going to watch, so expect further testing. We recommend you to start with small armies (500 - 1000 points in 8th edition rules) and try to play a game.
At the link you can find the basic ruleset in several languages, free download.
