[Blitzkrieg Commander] Rusos vs Eje - Arrabales de Leningrado - Krasny Bor

Seguimos con las hostilidades en el frente oriental en 1943. Esta vez nos desplazamos a un teatro poco conocido aquí en España, pero muy estudiado y reconocido en el resto del mundo. Hablamos de los combates de febrero de 1943 al sur de Leningrado en Krasni Bor. Los soviéticos preparan una gran ofensiva sobre la ciudad, unidades alemanas y españolas de la División Azul se chocan de frente con el avance ruso y se desata la batalla.

War rages on at the Eastern Front in 1943. This time we go to a little know battlefield at Spain, but wide known and researched in the rest of the world: the fight south of Leningrad at Krasny Bor. The Soviets launch a great offensive against the town, where German and Spanish Blue Division units clash with them in an attempt to stop the Russian advance.

Para esta partida, jugamos el escenario 15 del reglamento de BKC 4, Battle of  Attrition, en el que las dos fuerzas están posicionadas en el campo de batalla una frente a la otra y se lanzan al asalto de las posiciones enemigas. Los soviéticos desplegaron sus fuerzas en dos frentes, en su flanco izquierdo la masa de la infantería con sus armas de apoyo y en el derecho sus blindados, dejando el centro de la mesa más o menos despejado. Las unidades hispano-alemanas desplegaron en un frente más amplio, con infantería en los flancos apoyada por gran cantidad de piezas de artillería y los blindados en su centro-izquierda.

For this game we played scenario 15 of BKC4 rulebook, Battle of Attrition, in which both forces are deployed along the battlefield in front of each other and both assault the other one. The Soviets deployed their forces in two fronts: at the left flank the masses of infantry along their support weapons and at the right flank the the armoured vehicles, leaving the center sparsely occupied. The German-Spanish troops deployed widely, with infantry at the flanks supported by several pieces of artillery and armour at their center-left.

La partida se inició con un avance por el flanco derecho soviético de una columna de T-34 (gracias a que los mandos alemanes y españoles no se habían entendido muy bien y las unidades prácticamente no actuaron al inicio de la partida). Mientras la infantería intenta tomar una colina para avanzar contra las posiciones españolas de ese flanco.

The game started with a Red advance at the right flank as a T34 column proceded unopposed as the German and Spanish commanders there were unable to coordinate themselves. Meanwhile, Soviet infantry tries to secure the hill in front of them to then advance against Spanish positions at that flank.

Las tropas del Eje iniciaron un avance por toda la línea de frente, en su flanco derecho, la infantería, los equipos de morteros y PAK 36, usaron un bosque para hacer una aproximación sin ser vistos. Los Panzer IV tomaron las calles de un pequeño pueblo y avanzaron por el centro de la carretera, mientras los StuG III y el resto de la infantería tomaban posiciones para hacer frente a la oleada de T-34 que llegaban por ese flanco.

Axis troops then advanced all laong the front. At their right flank the infantry, mortar teams and PAK 36 took advantage of a nearby wood to avoid being detected. The Panzer IV rushed along the town's main road at the center of the battlefield and the StuG III took positions alongside Spanish infantry in order to face the wave of T34 and survive the ordeal.

Los soviéticos, ante el avance germano, desplazan a varios de sus blindados al centro del campo de batalla para hacer frente a los Pnz IV. Mientras los T-34 toman posiciones fuera de la línea de fuego enemiga, dos pequeños SU-76 se posicionan en la crestas de una colina, desenfilados para cubrir a los tanques más grandes e intentar ralentizar el despliegue de los Panzer enemigos. La infantería toma la colina y empieza a posicionar las armas de apoyo, las ametralladoras Maxim, para que cubran el avance de la infantería, pero son descubiertos por los ingenieros españoles, que comunicando con la artillería, empiezan a castigar la colina con fuego de mortero y de piezas de 105 y 155mm.

Seeing this, the Soviets move some armour to the center in order to deal with the Panzer IV. The T34 manouvre outside line of sight and two little SU76 take positions hull down behind a hill, trying to win time for their comrades so they can position themselves before the Germans do so. The infantry climbs Bratwurst Hill and start deploying their support weapons, mainly Maxim HMG, to cover the infantry, but their are soon discovered by Spanish engineers. They send word to the artillery and hell breaks loose at the Hill as high caliber rounds and mortar fire rain upon the tender Reds.

Los StuG III empiezan a hostigar a los T-34 del flanco derecho soviético, deteniendo su avance e iniciando un duro intercambio de fuego entre unidades blindadas. Es es aprovechado por los españoles de ese flanco par avanzar y situarse tras una colina, fuera de la línea de visión de las tropas soviéticas, pero lo suficientemente cerca como para suponer una amenaza al asalto para los blindados. En la colina, los SU-76 hacen fuego sobre los Panzer, sin causar grandes daños, pero consiguiendo desalojar a la dotación de un par de ellos.

The StuG III harass the T34 at the right flank stalling their advance via starting a taxing fire exchange. This allows the Spanish infantry to advance behind a hill, outside Soviet line of sight and close enough to become a threat for the Russian armour. At the central hill, the SU76 open fire against the Panzer without causing much damage but pinning a couple of them.

En la colina del flanco izquierdo soviético las bajas empiezan a acumularse, aunque el avance no les ha salido barato tampoco a los españoles, que también han perdido varias unidades. En el centro del campo de batalla los Panzer IV, con ayuda de alguno de los StuG III, consiguen dejar fuera de combate a uno de los SU-76. El segundo, con varios tiros muy bien apuntados, destruye uno de los Pnz IV y hace retroceder a un segundo. Esto permite al SU-122 tomar posiciones y unir la potencia de su cañón al combate, lo que hace saltar por los aires a un tercer Panzer IV y finalmente dos T-34 que también ha tomado posiciones de disparo, acaban con el cuarto tanque alemán. Por su parte, los StuG III y los cañones de infantería de los españoles detienen en seco el intento de flanqueo de los T-34 en el lado derecho del campo de batalla y eliminan a tres tanques rusos y un BA-64. La batalla está llegando a un punto culminante y ambas fuerzas están sufriendo gran número de bajas.

At the Soviet left flank casualties begin to mount, but things are not being easy for the Spanish either, who had lost several units as well. At the center, the Panzer IV, with help of some StuG III, manage to knock off one of the SU76. The second one manages to score several hits destroying one Panzer and forcing the another to withdraw. This allows the SU122 to take position and join his firepower to the attack, blowing up another German tank. Finally, two T34 destroy the last Panzer IV. Meanwhile, the StuG III and the Spanish infantry guns stop the T34 wave at the right flank eliminating three of them along one BA64. The battle is reaching it's climax and both forces are suffering a great deal of casualties.

Al final de la batalla la cosa quedó en una victoria por la mínima a favor de los hispano-alemanes, con un resultado de 10 a 9 a su favor. Puede que si los soviético no se hubieran obcecado tanto en tomar la colina y se hubieran desplazado hacia el bosque o rodeado la misma por su lado izquierdo no hubieran perdido a tanta gente por el fuego de la artillería española (realmente fue una masacre sobre la colina, llegando a perder el ruso cuatro escuadras en un solo turno). Al final una partida muy interesante, este frente y momento de la guerra es especialmente duro para los dos contendientes y hace que las partidas sean muy reñidas y divertidas.

At the end of the battle things got pretty close with a Phyrric victory for the Germans and Spanish with a 10 to 9 result. Perhaps if the Soviets had not insisted in takin Bratwurst Hill and had advanced by the wood or it's left side they would not lost so many people to Spanish artillery (the Hill earned the nickname, with even four units being annihilated in one single turn!). It was an interesting game set up in a time when the war was specially hard for both opponents, making things close and bloody.
