Among the ruins of some bombed buildings, infiltrated units of the US Marine Corps are ambushed by IRA guerrilla fighters. The marines must break the encirclement back to their base camp to feed vital information for a SAS operation in the making.
Pau quería probar un reglamento de combate moderno con pocas figuras y a 28mm, así que Oriol y Sergi prepararon dos fuerzas de 1000 puntos de el MOD de Battleground, Modern Combat, con unidades regulares, los USMC de Sergi y unidades irregulares, las tropas del I.R.A de Oriol. Para la partida, las tropas americanas dispondrían de 3 equipos, uno de los cuales contaba con un especialista, un tirador selecto y un oficial al mando de todo el pelotón. Las tropas irlandesas estarían al mando de un "Señor de la Guerra" y disponían de 2 unidades de Guerrilleros, una de ellas con cargas de demolición y una furgoneta de transporte.
Pau wanted to test a rulebook for Modern combat with few 28mm models, so Oriol and Sergi set up a couple of 1000 points of our mod for Battleground with a patrol of Sergi's USMC as regular force and Oriol's IRA as an irregular one. The Americans deployed three fireteams, one of them including and extra sharpshooter, as well as an officer commanding the platoon. The two four men strong Irish units were led by a warlord. One of the units was equipped with demolition charges and the other rode a van.

The marines deployed in cover along their deployment zone while the guerrillas infiltrated, thus deploying occulted all over the field. The players then assigned units to the activation cards and readied for the battle.

The battle was quick. The sharpshooter identified several partisans and wounded one of them as the Irish advanced at the center of the battlefield, taking firing positions and checking a nearby abandoned vehicle to see if it was still operational. At the right flank the IRA leader and his bodyguards advance full ahead riding the van, showering the Yankees with AK47 fire, grenades and Molotov cockatails.
Mientras tanto, en el flanco izquierdo, varios guerrilleros se enfrentan al segundo fire team americano, las armas ligeras de los americanos, son poco efectivas a larga distancia, así que deciden acercarse al asalto contra los guerrilleros. Meanwhile, the left flank sees action as more guerrillas clash with the second American fireteam. The letter ones approach to their enemies because their samll arms fire is ineffective due to the good use of cover of the Irish, catching them by suprise, wounding one and routing another. But their comrades hear the firefight sounds and threw a Molotov against the Yankees. It is well placed and the two Americans died horribly amisdt the flames.
La cosa empieza a pintar mal para los americanos, en el flanco izquierdo solo queda un miembro operativo del Fire Team 2, en el derecho, el Fire Team 3 ha conseguido acabar con el Señor de la Guerra y su escolta, pero a costa de perder también a casi todo el equipo. Cuando el último de los operadores del Fire Team 3 salta de la furgoneta para unirse a su oficial, un cohete de RPG sale de las ruinas y hace estallar el vehículo, matando al operador que quedaba del Fire Team 3. En el centro del campo de batalla, de pronto, de entre las runas, un paquete de gran tamaño cae cerca de los miembros del Fire Team 1, cuando se dan cuenta de lo que es, el guerrillero que ha lanzado la carga de demolición de C4, la hace estallar, destrozando a todo el equipo y al oficial, cosa que pone fin a la partida.
La partida fue muy divertida, la verdad es que tanto en su versión de WWII como en la de Modern Combat, Battleground, es un juego que da muchísima libertad y diversión a los jugadores y a la gente que mire la partida, hace muchos años que lo descubrimos y seguimos encantados con el sistema. Dentro de poco haremos un update con más reglas y algún escenario con vehículos y helicópteros.

Things grew dire for the Yankees. At the left flank only one member of Fireteam 2 remains operational. At the right one Fireteam 3 has wiped out the warlord and his cronies, but they lost almost everyone in the process. Then the last of it's members jumps the van to link with his commanding officer, but an RPG rocket flies from the ruins crashing against the vehicle making it explode and thus eliminating Fireteam 3 for good. At the center of the field a big package springs from the ruins and falls right at the feet of Fireteam 1. Before the marines can react, the insurgent who had just throw the C4 demolition charge presses the button blasting apart the whole fireteam as weel as their officer, thus marking the end of the game.
It was a fun engagement, since this ruleset gives the players a lot of freedom and fun to both players and onlookers. We discovered it years ago and we are still enchanted by it. Soon we will update the mod with new rules and scenarios, icnlduing vehciles and helicopters.
